Deleted WhatsApp messages: what's left and what isn't

In short

Exporting a WhatsApp chat doesn't recover deleted messages. If a message was deleted "for everyone", the file only keeps a notice like "This message was deleted" with the sender and time; if it was deleted "for me", nothing is left. Edited messages show their final text plus a marker, and disappearing messages that have already vanished aren't exported. Chat Recap counts deleted messages for their sender and gives an award to whoever deletes the most.

Someone deleted a message and now the whole group wants to know what it said. Does it show up in the exported chat? Can it be recovered? Straight answers, no miracle tricks.

“This message was deleted.” Four words that can keep a whole group speculating for an afternoon. If you’re thinking of exporting the chat to find out what it said, here’s what’s actually in the file, what isn’t, and what you can (and can’t) do.

Delete for me versus delete for everyone

WhatsApp has two ways to delete a message, and they leave very different traces:

Delete for me Delete for everyone
Who stops seeing it Only you The whole chat
What others see The message, as usual A notice: “This message was deleted”
Time limit None Only for a limited time after sending (around two days)
In your exported chat Nothing: the message doesn’t exist The notice, with sender and time

That’s why two people in the same group can export slightly different chats: if one of them deleted messages “for me”, they’re missing from that export.

What shows up in the exported file

Messages deleted for everyone

They appear as a normal line, with the date, the time and the sender’s name, but with the notice instead of the text:

[05/10/2026, 22:41:07] Anna: This message was deleted.
[05/10/2026, 22:41:30] Ben: What did you delete? 👀

If you deleted it yourself, the text changes to “You deleted this message.” The exact wording depends on the phone’s language and version, and some older Android exports even just write null. In every case, the original text isn’t there.

Edited messages

An edited message shows its final text with a marker at the end, like <This message was edited>. The earlier version isn’t stored anywhere in the file.

Disappearing and view-once messages

If the chat has disappearing messages turned on, the ones that have already vanished aren’t exported: as far as WhatsApp is concerned, they no longer exist. View-once photos and videos are never included either.

For the other markers WhatsApp leaves in the file (omitted media, system notices, invisible characters), the guide to the WhatsApp export file format goes through all of them.

Can they be recovered?

Honestly: almost never. These are the real options:

  • Exporting the chat: recovers nothing. It exports what you see.
  • An old backup: if it was made before the deletion, restoring it might bring the message back, but restoring replaces your phone’s chat history and you’d lose everything since. It’s rarely worth it.
  • Android’s notification history: on recent Android versions, if you had it turned on beforehand, it keeps the last few hours of notifications. If the message reached you as a notification before it was deleted, the text may be there.
  • “See deleted messages” apps: they do the same as notification history, but ask for permission to read all your notifications, from every app. That’s a lot to give up for a bit of gossip.

And a question worth asking: if someone deleted a message, it’s usually because they didn’t want it read.

How stats count deleted messages

When you analyze a chat with the Chat Recap analyzer, deleted-message notices are handled like this:

  • They count as a message from the sender. They sent it, even if they deleted it afterwards, so it adds to their total.
  • They add no words, emojis or phrases. The text is gone, so it can’t feed the text counts.
  • There’s an award for them. Whoever deleted the most messages (at least two) wins Professional Deleter. The awards guide explains every rule.
  • Edited markers are removed before words are counted, so they don’t skew the counts.

Messages deleted “for me” can’t be counted, because they leave no trace. That’s why the award measures who deletes for everyone. The guide to group stats explained covers the rest of the counting rules.

In short

  • An exported chat never shows the content of a deleted message.
  • It does show who deleted for everyone, and when.
  • Anything deleted “for me” disappears without a trace, from the file too.
  • Edited messages appear in their final version, with a marker.

If what you really want to know is who deletes the most in the group, that one has an answer: export the chat without media and check the Professional Deleter award.

FAQ

Can I see a deleted message by exporting the WhatsApp chat?

No. An export only contains what's in the chat at that moment. A message deleted for everyone shows up as "This message was deleted", without the original text, and one deleted only for you doesn't show up at all.

Can you tell who deleted a message in a group?

Yes, for "Delete for everyone": the notice shows the name of whoever wrote it and the time. The exported chat shows the same, so you can count how many messages each person has deleted.

Do apps that recover deleted WhatsApp messages work?

They only read the notifications that reach your phone, so at best they keep what you were notified about before the deletion. To do that they need permission to read all your notifications, from every app: a steep privacy price.

How does Chat Recap count deleted messages?

As messages from whoever sent them, because they did send them, but with no words or emojis, since the text is gone. Whoever has the most (at least two) wins the Professional Deleter award.
