Your group chat's recap as a gift for the group

In short

A recap of the group chat is an original gift only someone inside the group can make: export the WhatsApp group, analyze it for free in your browser with Chat Recap and present it as a story-style Wrapped, a printed PDF or a link. It works for group anniversaries, farewells, weddings and the end of a school year, as long as you check what's in it first and the group is happy with it.

Years of messages, voice notes and plans that never happened. Turned into a recap with real numbers, they're a gift no shop sells and the whole group gets instantly.

Some WhatsApp groups are, quite literally, the history of a friendship: the graduation trip, the babies, the house moves, the “who’s in?” messages that came to nothing. That chat can become a gift: a recap with the real numbers, who kept the group alive, the day it all went off, and the awards everyone knew who’d win.

You don’t need to be a designer or spend money. You need to be in the group, have the chat on your phone, and take a bit of care presenting it.

Occasions it works for

Occasion What to highlight
The group’s anniversary How long it’s existed, how many messages you’ve sent, the busiest day ever
A farewell (someone’s moving away) What that person wrote, their awards, the hours they were impossible to reach
A wedding The couple’s chat with their friends, or the couple’s own group: material for the speech
The end of a school year or chapter The class, team or course group, closed off with its recap
Christmas or New Year The Wrapped with just the year’s messages
A group member’s birthday A screen or two about that person, with their records

How to put it together

  1. Export the group. On iPhone, tap the group name and Export Chat; on Android, ⋮ > More > Export chat. Choose Without media. The export guide has the details.
  2. Analyze it. Drop the file into the Chat Recap analyzer. It’s worked out in your browser, without uploading the chat to any server, and a few seconds later you have the Wrapped and the report.
  3. Go through all of it before showing anyone. Check the signature phrases, the awards and, if you’re making the game, the messages. What’s funny in a chat at three in the morning isn’t always funny at a wedding.
  4. Pick the format for the occasion (the options are below).

Export the chat ahead of time. If it’s a surprise, do the export yourself: nobody in the group gets notified.

Gift formats

Live, on the TV

The star format for a dinner or a party: the Wrapped on a big screen, flicking through it like stories, with someone hosting. It works especially well if everyone first bets on who’ll win each award. There are more ideas for playing with it in WhatsApp group games.

Printed

The full report downloads as a PDF, with every award, leaderboard and chart, and you can print it. Add a cover you design yourself and a simple binding, and it becomes a little yearbook for the group. For an album or a frame, each Wrapped screen can be saved as an image in story, square or landscape format.

From the last Wrapped screen you can create a link so the whole group can see it on their phones. It’s stored encrypted for 90 days and the key only travels in the link itself. Handy for groups spread across cities, or for sending at the stroke of midnight.

As a game

“Who said it?” turns real messages into a quiz: each round, you guess who wrote the message. As after-dinner entertainment at a farewell, it’s hard to beat.

With the AI analysis

If you want more than numbers, the optional AI analysis (3 € per chat) reads the conversation with pseudonyms instead of names and adds a profile for up to six people, the group’s big moments in order, inside jokes, the group’s dictionary and predictions for next year. It’s entertainment, not psychology, and it’s worth checking like everything else.

Ideas to make it special

  • Start with the first message. The date of the first message and how many days the group has been going make an emotional opening.
  • Find the story behind the busiest day. The Wrapped tells you which day it was; someone will remember why. Telling that story beats the number.
  • Give everyone a moment. An award, a figure or a phrase of theirs. Make sure nobody is left out, especially whoever writes the least.
  • At a wedding, fewer numbers and more story. Two or three well-chosen facts (“we’ve sent each other 38,000 messages and 40% are hers”) work better in a speech than a whole report.
  • Pair it with something physical. The printed PDF, a group photo, or a cake decorated with the group’s emoji.

What to avoid

  • Springing private messages on people. If the gift includes real messages, make them ones anyone could read out loud.
  • Putting someone on the spot. The Ghost award is funny among friends; in front of the couple’s families, maybe not.
  • Posting it outside the group without permission. Public stories full of names and stats aren’t a gift for everyone.

The best gift is the one the group instantly recognizes as theirs. With the real numbers from your chat, that comes built in.

FAQ

How much does it cost to give a WhatsApp group recap?

Nothing, if the stats, the Wrapped, the awards, the PDF and the share link are enough: all of that is free. The optional AI analysis, which adds profiles of each person, key moments and predictions, costs 3 € per chat.

Can I print the group recap?

Yes. The full report downloads as a PDF with every award, leaderboard and chart, and you can print it at home or at a print shop. For an album, you can also save each Wrapped screen as an image.

Do I need the group's permission?

To show it to the group itself, at least give them a heads-up; to share the link or post anything outside the group, ask first. It includes names, stats and, if you choose, real messages.

How long does it take to put together?

Exporting and analyzing the chat takes about ten minutes. What takes longer is the presentation: picking the screens, checking the game's messages and deciding what story to tell on each one.
