About Chat Recap
Chat Recap is a free tool to find out what a WhatsApp group says about the people in it. It is made by Stack Studio, a web studio in Barcelona.
What Chat Recap is
You upload a WhatsApp chat export and get stats, awards, iconic phrases, a story-style Wrapped to share, a full PDF report and the “Who said it?” game. It works with group chats and one-to-one chats, exported from iPhone or Android, in Catalan, Spanish and English.
It started with a question everyone in a group chat has asked: who talks the most, who never replies, when does the chat come alive. We wanted to answer it with real numbers, in a way that is fun to show the group. The guides explain how to get the most out of it.
Who is behind it
Chat Recap is a product by Stack Studio (Stack Studio, S.L.), a Barcelona studio that designs and builds websites and apps. The same team makes the product, the analyzer and the guides. Full company details are in the legal notice.
We are independent: Chat Recap is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta. It is also unrelated to WhatsApp’s built-in AI chat summaries and to other apps with similar names: Chat Recap is chat-recap.com.
How it works and why it is private
The stats are computed inside your browser. The chat file is never uploaded to a server, and it is gone when you close the page.
Only if you turn on the optional AI analysis is the text sent to Claude (Anthropic), with pseudonyms instead of names and without phone numbers, emails or links. The privacy policy lists exactly what is and is not sent.
How it is funded
The report, the Wrapped, the PDF and the game are free and paid for by ads. The AI analysis costs 3 € per chat, because each analysis has a real cost, and removes the ads for that chat. We do not sell anyone's data.
How we write the guides
The guides are written by the team that built the WhatsApp export reader, from what we learned making it work with iPhone and Android chats in three languages.
When WhatsApp changes a menu or the file format, we review them. Every guide shows its last update date at the top. If you spot a mistake, write to us and we will fix it.
