How to make a WhatsApp Wrapped of your group chat
In short
Export the group from WhatsApp as a text file (iPhone: tap the group name, then "Export Chat"; Android: three dots, "More", "Export chat"; choose "Without media"), then drop the .txt or .zip into the Chat Recap analyzer. Your browser builds a free, story-style Wrapped with totals, top talkers and peak hours that you can share as images, a link or a PDF.
Spotify does it with your songs. You can do it with the group chat that never sleeps: a story-style recap of who talks most, when, and how much.

A “Wrapped” is a recap told as a sequence of full-screen cards, one fact per screen, that you tap through like Instagram stories. Spotify made the format famous with music. Applied to a WhatsApp group, the facts are things like the total number of messages, the busiest day in the group’s history, who carries the conversation and what time of night the group really comes alive.
Here is the whole process, from export to sharing, plus what each screen actually measures.
Step 1: export the chat from WhatsApp
WhatsApp has no “Wrapped” button, but it does let you export any chat as a text file. That file is the raw material.
- iPhone: open the group, tap the group name at the top, scroll to the bottom and tap “Export Chat”. Choose “Without Media”.
- Android: open the group, tap the three dots at the top right, then “More” and “Export chat”. Choose “Without media”.
Save the result somewhere you can reach from the browser (Files, Drive, or send it to yourself by email). On iPhone you usually get a .zip; on Android a .txt or a .zip. Both work.
“Without media” is almost always right: the file is tiny and carries all the text. You only lose the length of voice notes (see below). If the export menu is missing or the file looks empty, the export guide covers the usual causes.
Keep in mind that the export only contains what is on your phone. If you joined the group late or cleared the chat at some point, the Wrapped will start from there.
Step 2: upload it and let the browser do the counting
Open the Chat Recap analyzer and drop in the .txt or .zip (the limit is 25 MB, which a text-only export almost never reaches). The file is read and analysed on your own device: the chat is not uploaded to a server just to compute the stats. When it finishes, the Wrapped opens.
You move through it like a story: tap the right side or swipe left to go forward, tap the left side to go back. On a computer the arrow keys and the space bar work too, and Escape closes it and takes you to the full report.
Step 3: what each screen shows
The exact sequence depends on the chat (a screen only appears if there is something to show), but a typical Wrapped without the AI analysis looks like this:
| Screen | What it measures |
|---|---|
| Total messages | Every message sent in the export, with the date of the first one and how many days the chat spans. System notices (“X added Y”) are not counted. |
| The group | How many people have written, and how many of them produce 60% of all messages. In many groups it’s two or three. |
| Most intense day | The single day with the most messages, compared with the average on days when anyone wrote at all. |
| Who talks the most | The top three by number of messages and their share of the total. |
| Rush hour | Messages per hour of the day as a bar chart, plus the favourite weekday. |
| Night Owl | The person with the highest proportion of messages sent between midnight and 6 a.m. (if nobody qualifies, the award for the longest messages appears instead). |
| Awards | A few awards get their own screen, then the full list. They are playful titles based on counts, not a personality test. The awards guide explains how each one is decided. |
| Voice notes | Who sends the most. Only appears if there are at least 3 voice notes. |
| Emoji | The group’s most used emoji and how many times it appeared. |
| Topics and mood | A local estimate based on keywords, emojis and laughs. Each screen says so in small print. |
| Catchphrase | The most repeated phrase in the group. |
| The group’s story | A short story of the chat built from the stats. |
| Final screen | Buttons for the full report, a share link and the “Who said it?” game. |
Two details that surprise people. The “normal day” figure on the intense-day screen uses active days only, so quiet weeks don’t drag it down. And the voice note screen ranks by number of notes unless you exported “with media”, because only then does the file include the audio and its length. If the group sends a lot of voice notes and you want minutes, that’s the one case where including media is worth it.
For the definitions behind the numbers (what counts as a message, how deleted messages and media are treated), see understanding your group stats.
Step 4: share it
There are three ways to get the Wrapped out of your phone and into the group, and they suit different situations.
Images, one screen at a time
Most screens have a “Share” button. It renders that card as a PNG in one of three formats:
- Story 9:16 (1080×1920) for Instagram or WhatsApp stories.
- Square 1:1 (1080×1080) for a feed post or to drop in the chat.
- Link 1200×630, a wide format that looks good as a preview.
The image is generated on your device. On a phone the system share sheet opens with the image attached; on a computer it simply downloads.
A link for the whole group
From the final screen you can generate a link so everyone else can watch the Wrapped and browse the report on their own phone without exporting or uploading anything. You confirm you have the group’s permission first, and choose whether to include the AI analysis (which contains real quotes).
How it works: your browser encrypts the Wrapped, an encrypted copy is stored for 90 days, and the key travels only in the part of the link after the #, which browsers never send to the server. Whoever has the link can see the names and stats, so share it in the group, not on a public profile. The privacy guide goes deeper on this.
The full report has a PDF button that lays out everything (all awards, rankings, charts) in the same visual style, across as many pages as needed.
What the optional AI analysis adds
Everything above is free. The only paid part is the AI analysis, which costs 3 € per chat. When it’s on, the AI reads the conversation (with names replaced by pseudonyms and phone numbers, emails and links removed) and the Wrapped gains extra screens:
- what the group “is”, in one title and description;
- a profile for up to six people, with a role, a superpower and a kryptonite;
- AI awards, the group’s greatest moments in chronological order, inside jokes and quotes for posterity;
- a group dictionary, broken promises and eternal debates;
- “if the group were…” comparisons and predictions for next year.
It also replaces the local topic, mood and story estimates with readings based on the actual conversation. It takes a minute or two. Very long chats are trimmed to a fixed size by keeping whole days spread evenly across the history plus the busiest days, so the analysis still covers the full timeline. It’s entertainment, not psychology.
Tips for a Wrapped people actually enjoy
- Pick a moment. End of the year, the day after a trip, a group anniversary, or the night before someone moves away. A Wrapped lands better when it closes a chapter.
- Know what period you’re showing. By default, the Wrapped covers everything in the export, from the first message on your phone to the last. If you want just this year, pick “Only 2026” before analyzing: the WhatsApp Wrapped year-in-review guide explains how.
- Watch it together. Screen-share it on a video call or cast it to the TV at dinner and let someone narrate. The “who talks the most” screen is where the arguing starts.
- Check before sharing. Skim the screens first. If a catchphrase or AI quote is something a person wouldn’t want in a story, share the screens one by one instead of the whole link.
- Follow it with a game. Once everyone has seen the numbers, the Who said it? game uses real messages from the group and works well as round two.
Next step: export your group “Without media” now, even if the big reveal is weeks away. It takes a minute and you’ll have the file ready when the moment comes.
FAQ
Is making a WhatsApp Wrapped free?
Yes. The stats, the story screens, the images, the share link and the PDF are free. The only paid part is the optional AI analysis, which costs 3 € per chat.
Is my chat uploaded to a server to create the Wrapped?
No. The file is read and analysed on your own device. Only if you create a share link is an encrypted copy stored for 90 days, and the key stays in the part of the link after the #, which browsers never send to the server.
Can I make a Wrapped for just this year?
Yes. Before analyzing, pick “Only 2026” (or last year) instead of “Whole chat”: the Wrapped, the awards and the report are worked out from that year's messages only. The year-in-review guide has the details.
Why doesn't my Wrapped start when the group was created?
The export only contains what is on your phone. If you joined the group late or cleared the chat at some point, the Wrapped starts from there.
